Chapter 10

The minute Eve hopped in her car after leaving Tom’s house she called Susan and Lena to set up a lunch date for the next day.

She didn’t tell them what had happened but they could sense something was amiss right away; but the ‘something’ they had imagined was more along the lines of a marriage proposal from Mike or news of his much anticipated infidelity; not a hot romp in the hay with terrible Tom the sewer guy.

Eve did not sleep well at all that night; it’s doubtful that anyone in her position would. She was experiencing a good deal of guilt over what had taken place and felt as if she had betrayed Mike and possibly undermined a chance at real happiness for the first time in her life.

But on the other hand she also considered the fact that they had just started seeing each other and no official consensus had been reached or indicated as of yet with regard to exclusivity; all they had essentially agreed to do was continue to see each other romantically and see where it goes. This didn’t make her feel any better.

Despite her sassy brash demeanor Eve wasn’t the type of girl to just hop into bed with any guy she hardly knew…this was completely out of character as she wasn’t looking for meaningless sex; she was looking for love.

And this was essentially the crux of the problem she was having reconciling her actions and feelings where Tom was concerned. Why on earth would she have sexual relations with a guy she doesn’t even like and hardly know?

The obvious answer was that she did in fact have strong emotional and romantic feelings for Tom but she wasn’t prepared to acknowledge it or simply wasn’t consciously aware of it.

She paced back and forth in her tiny yet ultra-stylish loft apartment from her bedroom area to her living room, which was all of about twenty five feet, drinking coffee after coffee while mumbling to herself;

“Nice going Eve! Crappers! How could I make such a mess of this? Mike has been so wonderful and kind and his mom and grandma were so nice to me; they allowed me into their home and I repaid them for their kindness by sleeping with a sewer worker behind their backs like a common streetwalker; I’m a horrible dirty girl; that’s all there is to it; I’m so ashamed; damn you Tom! Why did you have to screw everything up! I should have never gone to see him and left well enough alone; but no; I had to stick my nose in”

She finally fell asleep on her sofa at about 4am when the caffeine went AWOL and woke to the sound of her radio alarm at 6am and a formidable coffee stain on her area rug; she apparently fell asleep with the mug still in hand and the coffee apparently seized the opportunity to escape;

“Great! This is the second mess I’ve managed to create in the last 24 hours”
